A kind and naive girl Nastya returns after boarding school to her home village. Her family lives in poverty, but Nastya is not afraid of difficulties, because she is an excellent house-painter and there is always a job for her. However the girl quickly realizes that she is not welcome in her family: her always drunk stepfather is not happy with the new tenant and her mom has become quite a stranger.
Suddenly fate gives Nastya a chance: the son of the governor, Pavel, who came to the village for a song contest, is fascinated by the girl and the two start dating. But when Nastya discovers that she is pregnant, it turns out that Pavel has other plans.
